July 15, 2016Product Review: Kentwool Socks
Having served as a consultant in a former life to Sara Lee Corporation, I have seen a sock manufacturing operation up close and personal. Needless to say, I have tried every type of sock possible – dress socks, athletic socks, no-show socks, performance socks, and the list goes on. Yes, over the years, manufacturing technologies have greatly improved, as have the materials used to make socks. The classic no-show Footjoy sock has been my preferred golf sock since the college golf days but when I hear my good friends from PGA Tour Radio, John Maginnes and Brian Katrek, tell me again and again that nothing compares to the socks produced by KENTWOOL…well, I had to give them a try.
The Sock: Tour Profile Game Day Light Blue and Navy
I chose the Tour Profile in my favorite team colors primarily because for some strange reason nearly my entire wardrobe consists of these two colors. My wife has been on to me about adding some color to my closet but I just can’t help myself. Before I dive into my test drive, I’d also like to add that I have been experiencing issues in the bones in my right foot that may require me to start wearing an insert. However, for this review I am sans insert.
The quality is evident immediately. These aren’t your normal golf socks. Ordinarily, it’s hard to get super excited about a pair of socks, but after putting them on I could instantly feel the KENTWOOL difference. Now it was time to put them to the test. To do so, I decided to wear a brand new, out-of-the-box Footjoy DNA golf shoes. Yes, I believe in testing under strenuous conditions.
At the start of 2016, I decided I was going to get in better shape and start walking the fairways again. So, the timing to test a pair of Kentwool socks was perfect. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure walking 18 holes in a brand new pair of shoes was the smartest decision but John Maginnes promised I could walk in a pair of 25 year-old Footjoy Classics without issue.
The Result: 2 Thumbs Up, I Mean, 5 Toes Up!
Wow, did these socks really perform. The extra cushioning really absorbed the blows while trekking up and down a fairly hilly golf course. I was very impressed with how cool my feet felt, unlike what I normally feel from those hot 100% cotton golf socks. So with the new shoes, were there any blisters? Not a hint! This was just my second walking round of golf in 2016 so my feet are as soft as a baby’s backside which normally makes for ripe blistering conditions. Glad to say the KENTWOOL Tour Profile sock performed exactly as advertised! Not even a hint of red anywhere on my feet after my round. As an added bonus, the soreness in my right foot that typically follows after a round of golf was greatly reduced. A win-win for me!
